A collaboration between CU Science Discovery and the Elementary Arts Lab, this program aims to support science teaching in elementary schools by building a network of CU artists, CU scientists and elementary school teachers. Elementary Arts Lab is passionate about bringing science, the arts and movement into children’s everyday lives. We aim to provoke curiosity, inquisition and wonder by presenting science as a way to see the world and the arts as a way to explore science in the world around us.

By participating in this program, teachers will collaboratively discover an array of new tools and skills to deliver traditional science lessons using engaging, interdisciplinary techniques that incorporate art, music and/or movement. In addition, this ongoing partnership with CU scientists, CU artists and other educators will support work in the classroom.

Our teacher professional development event will be held on the June 21, 2022. The event will include examples of Elementary Arts Labs science lessons as well as time for teachers to plan lessons with CU scientists and artists. We will also we host virtual brainstorming sessions for lesson ideas, activities and explanations on Denver Public Schools professional development days throughout the academic year. In addition, we encourage CU scientists and artists to co-teach lessons with teachers in their classrooms.

Teachers – If you are interested in joining our waiting list to participate, please complete this form. The program is paid (10 hours) with 1 Continuing Education Unit credit from the CU Boulder’s Division of Continuing Education.

CU scientists and artists – If you are interested in joining our team, please contact elementaryartslab@colorado.edu. Undergraduates, graduate students and researchers are all welcome. We can offer small grants for undergraduates to participate.
