Public lands are an integral part of strong, sustainable communities. But we don’t always know how to manage those lands to meet everyone’s needs. The Center for Sustainable Landscapes and Communities (CSLC) is a collaboration between faculty, students, organizations, agencies, and committed residents in and around Boulder County, to engage in conversations about the future of our landscapes and communities.

The Center for Sustainable Landscapes and Communities was formed in 2018, as a collaboration between CU Boulder faculty, students from several departments and programs, and a committed group of Boulder citizens and agency staff. The Center provides foundational knowledge and a forum for productive discourse toward the planning and management of public lands in and around urban areas as integral components of sustainable and resilient communities in Colorado. The Center, based in CU Boulder’s Sustainability, Energy, and Environment Community (SEEC), is initially focused on public lands in the Boulder region, including Boulder city and county open space systems and adjacent federal lands, and their surrounding communities as local laboratories that exemplify the larger challenge of sustaining public lands in urban contexts.

Some of our current projects and collaborations include the 1) Community Collaboration on Forest Health with the goal to bring the community and land managers together to explore and discuss fire health and management in Boulder. This includes our Take-a-hike series; 2) Boulder Apple Tree Project to connect the ecological and cultural heritage of Boulder County apple trees to create a living resource that preserves the cherished place of apple trees and provides a bank of historic, sustainable cultivars for the future; and our 3) Cities, Ecosystems and Climate Change: Facing Threats and Growing Opportunities with efforts to regularly track and communicate the status and trends of Boulder County’s ecosystems and ecosystem services. This includes our upcoming collaboratively created Ecosystem Trends Report and Summit.
