The Emerging Composer Project (ECP), initiated by the CU Boulder College of Music Composition department, in partnership with the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra, seeks to empower pre-college students of diverse backgrounds and from low-middle income families through close mentorship/lessons with CU Boulder graduate students in the field of music composition.

After the first (pilot) iteration of the ECP during the Fall of 2019 with Legacy HS in Broomfield, CO it immediately became apparent that there was great interest among the students in participation in such a program.  Currently we are in the middle of the second year of this offering to Boulder High School students, and we have encountered the same enthusiasm.

Each of the program cycles culminate in a performance of newly-created musical works by these students, who are guided by the CU Boulder grad mentors, performed by members of the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra.  This program aims to give high school students who would not normally have such exposure a wonderful boost of confidence and pride – and may even go so far as to inspire them to consider a further pursuit in the musical arts.

This current outreach program will be the third cycle of the program, this time, with students at Skyline High School, in Longmont, CO, culminating in a gala performance by players of the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra of all students’ works from the previous two cycles and this current cycle of the ECP in Vance Brand Civic Auditorium in April/May 2022.
