The Center for Asian Studies (CAS) encourages and supports Asian area scholarship across disciplinary and university boundaries. Our mission is to support faculty research and teaching initiatives related to Asian Studies and to disseminate knowledge of Asia in the community and schools. As part of this mission, the Center for Asian Studies hosts numerous symposia, talks, performances and presentations each year.
- Speaker Series events are open to the public and provide a platform where University of Colorado and visiting faculty can present their research. In addition to these talks, we sponsor performances in music, theater and dance as well as conferences which are held throughout the academic year on the University of Colorado campus. For a schedule of Speaker Series events, please visit our website.
- Luncheon Series events provide an environment in which faculty and graduate students can share their research and works in progress. Faculty, staff, graduate students and external community members are welcome to attend. For a schedule of Luncheon Series events and more information about CAS, please visit our website.
Most of our events are free and open to the public. On occasion, events may require advance registration or have additional requirements; these will be clearly marked on the event descriptions.
OUTREACH
The Center for Asian Studies (CAS) offers professional and curriculum development programs focused on East Asia, providing resources for K-12 teachers through the Program for Teaching East Asia (TEA) and the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA).
In 2023, supported by a Title VI grant from the U.S. Department of Education, CAS re-established its South, Southeast, and West Asia (SSEWA) Outreach Program. This initiative expands efforts to connect curriculum development to Asian Studies research and scholarship, strengthening CAS’s status as a National Resource Center (NRC) for Asian Studies.
The SSEWA Outreach Program provides Colorado K-14 educators with professional development opportunities related to the SSEWA regions. It also aims to improve educational outcomes for students as they learn more about SSEWA’s diverse cultures and rich histories.
Over the past year, SSEWA engaged a total of 32 teachers from the Colorado Front Range. These teachers participated in three programs held on the CU Boulder campus: a one-day workshop on “Barbie and Geopolitics” for high school teachers in Fall 2023, a “Maps and Conservation” workshop for elementary and middle school teachers in Spring 2024, and a three-day workshop on “Sports and Colonialism in South and Southeast Asia” for high school teachers and community college instructors in Summer 2024.
With support from the CU Office for Public and Community-Engaged Scholarship, SSEWA aims to reach more teachers and deepen their awareness of South, Southeast, and West Asia’s diverse cultures, histories, and contemporary issues. Three in-person workshops are planned for AY 2024-25: “Afghanistan’s Terrain and Traditions” for high school teachers in Fall 2024, “Children’s Literature about Vietnam” for elementary teachers in Spring 2025, and the “50th Anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War” for high school and community college instructors in Summer 2025.
