CU-Boulder Alumna and Zero Waste Specialist to Discuss Recycling Benefits on April 10 at TSJC

Just in time for Earth Day, a recycling specialist and University of Colorado Boulder alumna will review the benefits of recycling in a community event on Thursday, April 10, at 7p.m. in the Massari Theater at Trinidad State Junior College (TSJC).

Join Kate Bailey, program developer at Eco-Cycle International in Boulder, for “Beyond Recycling: Why Trash Matters and Which Actions Make the Biggest Difference.”

Bailey will address the benefits and limitations of recycling, and she will explore the larger economic and social opportunities that come from rethinking individuals’ relationships with “stuff.”

“Recycling has proven environmental and economic benefits and has become a mainstream activity in the United States over the past few decades—it’s said that more people recycle than vote,” Bailey said. “But have we placed too much emphasis on just moving our trash from one can to another?

“We’ll focus on which actions you can take, as an individual and as a community, that really make the biggest difference.”

Bailey has researched and documented zero waste programs and initiatives from around the world. She has a B.A. in environmental studies and economics from CU-Boulder.

Tickets for “Beyond Recycling” are $4 for adults and $3 for seniors and children. They can be purchased at the door the evening of event or in advance at the Trinidad Community Foundation, 134 West Main Street, Suite 24. TSJC students and faculty may attend for free with a school identification card. All proceeds will benefit local Terra Firma Recycling

The April 10 program is part of “CU in the Community,” a series of lectures by CU-Boulder faculty, staff and affiliates. The community program is jointly sponsored by Trinidad State Junior College, Trinidad Community Foundation, Trinidad & Las Animas County Chamber of Commerce, and the CU-Boulder Office for University Outreach.
