CU-Boulder Science Discovery to Host Summer Showcase for All Ages July 31

Science Discovery will host its inaugural Summer Showcase, a hands-on family science night, on Tuesday, July 31, from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Glenn Miller Ballroom, in the University Memorial Center, 1669 Euclid Avenue.

Science Discovery is a science education outreach program of the University of Colorado Boulder, Division of Continuing Education. Its mission is to heighten interest and increase literacy in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) by providing hands-on experiences that connect K-12 students and teachers to current CU-Boulder science.

Founded in 1983, Science Discovery coordinates hundreds of summer and after-school classes that connect youth ages 5-18 to STEM fields, in addition to delivering classroom presentations and teacher workshops. The Summer Showcase is designed to appeal to all age groups and provide a venue for students, parents, and community members to participate in hands-on science together.

“Parents often joke with us that they wish they could take some of our classes, too,” said Stacey Forsyth, director of Science Discovery.  “We wanted to celebrate the end of our summer season with an event that will bring together some of the more than 2,000 students who participated in our classes this summer and provide parents and community members an opportunity to see what the students accomplished in their classes and tryout some of our favorite activities for themselves.

Science Discovery’s Summer Showcase will feature:
— Interactive stations highlighting summer class topic areas, such as robotics, biotechnology, renewable energy, gardening, science magic, video games, and more,
— Demonstrations by Science Discovery students,
— The Human Body Obstacle Course,
— “Muggle Magic,” and
— Student projects, such as rockets, origami, stop-motion films, video games, and cigar box guitars.
