CU-Boulder’s Science Discovery Summer Programs Go Green!

Thirty new classes are being offered to Science Discovery students this summer including several with an environmental focus. A wide variety of classes for ages 4-16 are offered throughout the summer including math, science, and technology and are taught with hands-on activities that are fun and informative. Classes range from Environmental Explorers – that has students observe cloud behavior to predict the weather – to Gardening 101, Green Power, Incredible Edible Plants, as well as Secrets of the Hive and Advanced Beekeeping. Children can also experiment with solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, biomass, and other energy sources in activities such as building a solar car and generating electricity from wind.

"Environmental education has always been a key component of CU Science Discovery,” said Stacey Forsyth, director of the program. “Students today continue to be keenly interested in conservation and sustainability and this year, we're happy to be offering a wide variety of classes, from gardening to green energy, that address students' interests and increase their understanding of critical environmental issues. We're also thrilled to be partnering with the CU Environmental Center on two new initiatives: the Computers to Youth summer program, in which students rebuild surplus computers, and a new Science Discovery garden installation." CU Science Discovery, a program of the Division of Continuing Education and Professional Studies, collaborates with the School of Education to stimulate scientific interest and literacy by connecting Colorado’s youth, teachers, and families to the cutting-edge science happening at CU-Boulder.
