“CU @ the Longmont Public Library” Series to Focus on Deep Water Archaeology

LONGMONT – The next installment of the CU @ The Longmont Public Library series will feature a talk by Professor Emeritus Robert Hohlfelder, PhD, entitled "Searching for Poseidon's Deepest Secrets – Maritime Archaeology in the Depths of the Mediterranean”on Thursday, January 27, 2011, at 7 p.m.

Hohlfelder, has directed or participated in more than 50 maritime archaeological expeditions throughout the Mediterranean, including the discovery of the submerged harbor of ancient Aperae in Turkey.  He currently serves as a senior maritime archaeologist for an international interdisciplinaryresearch group engaged in the deep-water search for 5th century BC shipwrecks off the coast of Greece.

His presentation will offer a general introduction to the newest dimension of underwater archaeology with references to his own work in the northern Aegean Sea and the Sea of Crete.

According to Hohlfelder, the Mediterranean has been slow to reveal its secrets, but even its most remote depths are no longer beyond harvest. A new, and perhaps final, frontier of classical archaeology is evolving – the search for shipwrecks in the deepest waters of the Mediterranean.  Hohlfelder will discuss the equipment available for this research, the protocols followed to discover and survey new sites, legal issues facing the deep-water archaeologist, and the potential of this new field for adding to our knowledge of ancient societies.

“CU @ The Longmont Public Library” is sponsored by the CU-Boulder Office for University Outreach, the Longmont Public Library, and Friends of the Longmont Public Library. Tickets or reservations are not required and the programs are free and open to the public.
