Families Invited to African Song and Dance Performance in Louisville Sept. 8

Community members of all ages are invited to join Nii Armah Sowah, University of Colorado Boulder senior instructor of theatre and dance, in a participatory song and dance program on Saturday, Sept. 8, on the front steps of the Louisville Public Library, 951 Spruce Street.

The program, “African Songs of Life with the 1000 Voices Project,” is free and open to the public and will begin at 11 a.m. on the east side of the library.

Sowah leads the 1000 Voices Project, which offers a variety of popular community programs in different settings bringing people together to build peaceful communities. Sowah uses song, rhythm, storytelling, and dance to facilitate community building, cultivate multicultural understanding, and encourage personal growth. Drawing from his diverse background, Sowah blends his African heritage and understanding of Western psychology to provide powerful and unique experiences for participants.

“Nii Armah Sowah’s classes should be a prerequisite for every student, everywhere. It’s about dance, yes, but not dance as westerners know it,” said a past 1000 Voices participant. “It’s about so much more.”

Part of a series called CU at the Library, the Sept. 8 program is jointly sponsored by the Louisville Public Library and the CU-Boulder Office for University Outreach. It is one of many public programs offered through CU-Boulder partnerships with local libraries. For more information about CU at the Library, visit http://conted.colorado.edu/library/.
