Outreach and Engagement Staff Coalesce for Community-University Boundary Spanners Workshop

Outreach staff from across campus and CU System came together in June for a professional development workshop led by facilitators from the Engaged Scholarship Consortium.

“Community-University Boundary Spanners: A Framework for Capacity Building, Quality Improvement, and Professional Development for Outreach and Engagement Staff” was sponsored by the Office for Outreach and Engagement and facilitated by Katherine Loving, civic engagement coordinator for the University of Wisconsin Madison, and Susan B. Harden, assistant professor at the University of North Carolina Charlotte. Harden and Loving discussed trends and opportunities in the engagement movement in higher education and the roles for staff in particular.

Together the group of approximately 45 staff members took part in hands-on teamwork exercises, discussed a framework for an outreach and engagement community of practice at CU-Boulder, and identified the next steps for further collaboration among outreach and engagement programs.

A steering committee for outreach and engagement staff is one of the emerging outcomes of the meeting. Several staff members elected to participate in the budding committee, and further participation is welcome. For more information or to participate, contact Jeanne McDonald, assistant director for outreach and engagement.
