Public Invited to Dive into CU-Boulder’s Water-Themed Weekend Courses

This spring, as Colorado marks the anniversaries of several significant legislative and organizational water policies, a portion of the CU on the Weekend series will focus on this precious natural resource. CU on the Weekend offers the public a range of mini-courses representing the passions and research of University of Colorado Boulder faculty.

“As Colorado residents, we are all acutely aware of the vital role water plays in our communities and daily lives,” said Linda Molner Kelley, director for university outreach. “These particular classes allow us to explore water issues more deeply from a variety of historical and scientific perspectives.”

Scheduled throughout the spring semester and beginning Saturday, Jan. 28, four CU on the Weekend programs will cover a range of topics illustrating water’s importance. Water-themed programs include:

“Water, Water, Everywhere Nor Any Drop to Drink…Safely,” with David Norris, professor of integrative physiology, Jan. 28, 9-11 a.m.
“A Ditch in Time: Denver and Western Water Issues,” with Patty Limerick, professor of history, Feb. 11, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
“Save Our Snow: Climate Change, Fracing, Ski Areas, and Water Security in Colorado and the West,” with Mark Williams, professor of geography, March 10, 1-4 p.m.
“The Long View: What Tree Rings Tell Us About Climate and Water in Colorado” with Jeff Lukas, senior research associate with the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Science (CIRES), April 21, 1-4 p.m.

In addition to water-themed courses, the CU on the Weekend spring 2012 lineup includes other interesting topics such as southwest archeology, criminal heroes in film and literature, Italian culture and African song and dance. Tuition is $15 for half-day courses and $25 for full-day courses. Advance registration is required.
