Searching for Ancient Harbors, 5th Century Shipwrecks Among Topics for Feb. 18 “CU in the Community” Program

TRINIDAD – One of the world's foremost historians and researchers in the field of classical maritime archaeology will present "Deep Water Archaeology: The Final Frontier" at the next "CU in the Community" public educational program on Thursday, February 18.

The program will begin at 7 p.m. in the Massari Theatre at Trinidad State Junior College (TSJC). All proceeds from the program will benefit Seniors, Inc., in Trinidad.

Robert Hohlfelder, PhD, a University of Colorado at Boulder professor in the Department of History, is world-renowned, having directed or participated in more than 43 maritime archaeological expeditions in the Mediterranean, including the discovery of the submerged harbor of ancient Aperlae off the coast of Turkey. Many of his digs around the world have been funded, in part, by the National Geographic Society.

He currently serves as a senior maritime archaeologist for an international team engaged in a deep-water search for shipwrecks off the coast of Greece dating from the Persian War era in the fifth century.

"CU in the Community" is sponsored by TSJC, the Trinidad Community Foundation, Trinidad & Las Animas County Chamber of Community and the CU-Boulder Office of Outreach & Engagement.

Tickets for the Feb. 18 program are $4 for adults and $3 for seniors and children and can be purchased at the door on the evening of the event. They also are available in Trinidad at Danielson Dry Goods and Curiosities.
