The CU Moving Company Brings Dance to Area Schools and Senior Centers

This spring the CU Moving Company has a full schedule of school performances and workshops across the Denver-metro area. The CU Moving Company is the undergraduate dance touring company from CU-Boulder’s Department of Theatre and Dance. Each fall the students prepare informal performances and movement classes with the help of the faculty. Presentations are then made during the spring semester at low-to-no cost to K-12 schools, community centers, and senior residences. The 2011 tour schedule includes performances at the Rocky Mountain Deaf School, Adams City High School in Commerce City, and the Academy and Frasier Meadows retirement communities.

The CU Moving Company also performed as part of the High School Dance Day in February. High school students representing 18 high schools from 10 different Colorado counties were treated to a day on campus attending classes, performances, and information sessions. The CU Moving Company ensemble, directed by MFA candidate Jessica Pearson, performed their full repertory highlighting student choreography that included eight dances ranging from hip hop to modern to jazz. The performance was concluded by fielding questions from the high school students. The High School Dance Day event allowed the high school students, parents, and teachers a glimpse into the diverse performance opportunities available in the dance program at CU-Boulder.

The dance outreach program works to build vital connections between the people of Colorado and the Dance Department faculty and students in order to cultivate knowledge and involvement in the art of dance throughout the state. The creative work of CU-Boulder faculty and students is brought directly to K-12 students and teachers across Colorado to educate them as to the variety of approaches to dance arts and related careers available in the professional world. They work to introduce the art of dance to people of all ages as well as encourage youth of many backgrounds and levels of experience to consider careers in the dance field.
