Valerio Ferme to speak in Carbondale on the Importance of the Humanities

April 4, 2016

CU-Boulder's Office for Outreach and Engagement is pleased to announce a free public lecture by CU-Boulder Professor Valerio Ferme at the Carbondale Library on Thursday, April 7 from 6 to 7:30 pm. Ferme, associate dean for the arts and humanities and a professor of Italian and comparative literature and associate faculty in film studies, will address the pressing question: Why should we continue to support and study the humanities, even as the humanities are under assault on many  different fronts? Taking as a point of departure his experiences in the classroom teaching Dante, Ferme will discuss how an understanding of history, literature, philosophy, religion and the arts is essential for leading a more fulfilling life not only in our daily interactions with each other, but also as workers and citizens.

Participants are welcome to continue the conversation with Ferme over dinner at the big table at Allegria, an Italian restaurant in Carbondale. Ferme also will talk to high school students at several schools in the valley about this topic on Friday, April 8th.

Ferme’s visit is made possible through a partnership between the Office for Outreach & Engagement and the Carbondale Council on Arts & Humanities as part of its Carbondale Creative District Programming, which empowers and promotes a vibrant community through engagement, innovation, collaboration and economic growth in Carbondale’s creative industries. The Office for Outreach & Engagement works to connect CU-Boulder faculty, staff, students, and university resources with citizens across Colorado.
