Buscando la Luz is a free after-school workshop co-designed with high school and elementary school students. Together, we explore learning through experiences guided by youth innovation, creativity, and collaboration.
The workshop takes place at Thornton High School in Thornton, Colorado twice a month throughout the school year. The high school students are recently arrived immigrants (Newcomers) who assist and guide elementary Latinx students, all of whom attend Adams 12. Together, they play and leverage their multi-lingual and diverse practices to collaborate and design learning experiences guided by their innovation and creativity. Examples include designing complex marble runs testing velocity and accuracy, creating complex mazes to challenge the sphero robot and building bridges that represent their desires for connection and possibility. As we collaborate and reflect on learning, new innovative ideas emerge.
Our mission is to co-create the kind of learning experiences that children and youth desire–experiences that honor each child’s ideas as valuable to collective learning and design.
