This community-engaged scholarship project brings together CU Boulder’s Mechanical Engineering program with community members in Pascagoula, MS to both monitor air quality and understand its impacts on local residents. We will use community-based air quality monitoring to bolster personal stories of adverse industrial pollution impacts in the Cherokee Forest subdivision of Pascagoula, MS. As we collect air quality data in the community, residents will document health symptoms and perceived odors in a journal. We will then work with participants to investigate any links between relative pollution levels and health or odor impacts. Participants will use the information to create data-informed stories and presentations to share with local officials. We hope this project provides a blueprint for other communities to conduct air monitoring campaigns that lead to actionable, data-informed outcomes.
