The Volunteer Resource Centers’ Alternative Breaks Program sends teams of CU Boulder students to engage in meaningful community service during their breaks from school. This program provides students with the opportunity to explore the United States while making a difference through service, reflecting upon their experience and creating long-lasting connections with others.
Basic Facts:
- Each Alternative Breaks trip is led by two Site Leaders and has 10 participants. All full-time undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to participate in or lead CU Alternative Breaks trips.
- The Alternative Breaks program offers Weekend Break Trips, Spring Break Trips and the First Year Service Experience.
- The cost for each Alternative Breaks trip is all-inclusive, covering transportation, food, lodging and community partner fees.
- Alternative Breaks trips are drug, tobacco and alcohol-free.
- All Alternative Breaks trips travel to and from their destination in a 12-passenger van.
- All Alternative Breaks trips adhere to the 8 Components of a Quality Alternative Break and the Active Citizen Continuum.
The CU Alternative Breaks Program partners with nonprofit organizations in Colorado and across the United States to plan community-based service projects that address a social or environmental issue. Each Alternative Breaks team works with at least one organization and engages in service projects to support the organizations’ mission.
To encourage students to apply for trips based on their interests rather than the destination, CU Alternative Breaks only advertises the states to which student teams will travel. Once accepted into the Alternative Breaks program, students learn of their specific trip destination.
