InsideU is a core project at the Renée Crown Wellness Institute. Its mission is to help youth, families and educators cultivate inner resources needed for a lifetime of wellness. InsideU is inspired by the Disney/Pixar film Inside Out and is a form of “Entertainment Education.” The program includes a series of episodes that are interactive, choose your-own-adventure stories. InsideU is designed to be fun with film clips from Inside Out, interactions with a “Mind Worker” who guides users through the app, and an interactive console to explore different intensities of emotion like anger, sadness, and joy.
The InsideU program will be offered for free to all Boys and Girls Clubs in Metro Denver (BGCMD) with an emphasis on elementary and middle-school youth. Through many collaborative design sessions, the voices and feedback from BGCMD members have directly contributed to the design and content of the InsideU program. The Mental Health Team at BGCMD also provided significant input on a series of companion lesson plans and works closely with the CU Boulder team on all implementation and evaluation activities.
The InsideU app is also available to other community organizations and individuals. Please contact Sam Hubley at hubley@colorado.edu for more information.
Emotions and Disney/Pixar's Inside Out at Boys and Girls Clubs
Additional Info
Working directly with Pixar Animation Studios, this collaborative project aims to build a foundation using Inside Out’s potential as an entertaining and educational tool for improving peoples’ mental and emotional wellness. Using youth co-design models, we developed a web app based on the film’s unique characters and narratives that are rooted in elements of evidence-based psychotherapy.
