The Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences department has designed a series of sensory-friendly planetarium experiences, in collaboration with the Autism Society of Boulder County, which will debut at the Fiske Planetarium at the University of Colorado Boulder in November 2024. The first two events will be the foundation of a series to broaden theater participation to neurodiverse children, opening the full dome experience and wonders of the night sky to all families in our community.
In November we will host two Sensory-Friendly Saturdays!
The first event will take place from 10 a.m. to Noon on Saturday, November 2, 2024. This event, while open to all ages, will be targeted towards younger children (~3-8 years), and will feature a) interactions with tactile exhibits in the Fiske gallery, including the tactile moon wall and meteorites, b) a soothing light and sound experience within the theater, and c) a screening of a new film developed by Fiske for pre-school students titled Hazelnuts, which includes intentional elements of social and emotional learning.
The second event will take place from 10 a.m. to Noon on Saturday, November 23, 2024. The material will be targeted towards older children (~6-12 years), though again open to all. This event will be similar to the previous event but will include a screening of selected short films from One Sky, which tell stories around cultural perspectives about the sky.
