The Source Water Protection in Oil and Gas Development project develops and provides diverse stakeholders with the information they need to protect source water areas while facilitating sustainable development of oil and gas resources. Colorado uses the term “source water” to describe water supplies that are for domestic use.
Project partners work with communities, the Colorado Rural Water Association, and state and local advisors to understand laws, regulations that protect–or could protect–domestic water supplies. We then created public educational materials. Communities may use these materials to inform planning processes. Additionally, the public, state/local lawmakers, and industry may use these materials in efforts to better protect Colorado drinking water sources.
The online Source Water Protection Guide includes:
- Potential threats to the domestic water supply from oil and gas development
- An explanation of state and local regulations that address these threats
- Best management practices (bmps) to protect water supplies
- Examples of how different water providers near oil and gas development are protecting their water supplies.
