The Economics Department at the University of Colorado Boulder in partnership with the Division of Continuing Education (CU Boulder), Economic Literacy Colorado, and Adams 12 Five Star Schools will offer a free credit-bearing summer course to rising high school seniors from the Denver metro area who are underrepresented in economics (first-generation, low-income, ethnically diverse and/or female). The goal of this diversity, equity and inclusion initiative is to engage with students who may not see themselves as future college students and strongly support them through a college experience. Summer 2023 is the second year of this program.
This course is a 2-credit 1000-level (i.e., introductory) economics topics course through CU Continuing Education’s Extraordinary Programs. Course dates are May 31 – June 26, 2023. The course will meet for 2.5 hours on Mondays and Wednesdays in an Adams 12 school with additional coursework completed at home and online. There will be one or two field trips (e.g., to CU Boulder, the Denver Mint, the Denver Branch of the Kansas City Federal Reserve, or to a business in downtown Denver). Students must attend all class sessions and field trips and complete all coursework in order to receive a transcripted grade from the University of Colorado Boulder as well as college and high school credit.
School counselors will nominate students in their junior year of high school to participate in the program. Nominated students will complete a program application, and if accepted, receive a grant to pay for the course. The course will be capped at 25 students and each Adams 12 school can nominate up to 5 students.
