Our overarching goal is to work with families with children ages 0-3 to co-design an effective, culturally sensitive, parent-based early education program.

Goals

  • Identify parents’ knowledge relevant to parenting and early development.
  • Offer parents a safe space to explore their ideas about parenting and development and support each other.
  • Empower parents by engaging in the methods scientists use to understand early development.

Together with Bring School Home and Boulder Housing Partners, we offer monthly parent-child group activities for babies and toddlers.

Each session consists of:

  • Shared snack or “merienda.”
  • Play time: A CU Boulder student-led age-appropriate activity modeled either after tasks used by developmental scientists or traditional games. For example, one activity could be to hide a toy in plain view of their child and see if they can find it (illustrating object permanence) or to play aserrín aserrán, a traditional baby rhyme sung while rocking baby back and forth with more or less support (illustrating motor development). Parents make observations taking the role of scientists and observers of their own child.
  • Discussion time: A facilitated open-ended discussion about parenting and development using parents’ observations as starting point.

The programs are offered at Boulder Housing Partners sites, in English and in Spanish.

  • Building Up Preschool -- Construyendo Preescolar desde Casa

    Additional Info

We are designing and creating activity kits to be distributed by Boulder Housing Partners (BHP) to their resident families with children 2-3 years of age. The goals of the kits are 1) to provide families with fun, educational, hands-on activities to share and 2) to serve as a bridge to BHP-Boulder Valley School District's Summer Shuffle program, which starts in June.
