The Jordan River was once one of the most abundant salmon-supporting ecosystems on Vancouver Island, and the location of a shared seasonal fishing village of the Ditidaht, Pacheedaht, Makah, and T’sou-ke Nations. Today the ecosystem is void of most marine life, with less than 15 salmon returning per year. A century of ecosystem destruction from mining, logging, fishing and hydro-electric generation has foreclosed the possibility of traditional harvesting on the river for the four Indigenous Nations.

Despite the challenges this river faces, there are a handful of committed community members and organizations that are invested in addressing the degradation and current state of the river. Additionally, there are thousands of people who pass through the watershed to surf, hike and bike with little awareness of how degraded the ecosystem is nor the potential there is to fix it. This project builds on a strong partnership with members of the Jordan River Watershed Awareness Coalition (JRWAC) to produce an accessible and shareable short video that generates awareness of the issues that the watershed faces and builds the foundation for future larger media projects.

The project also involves a April 2025 workshop roundtable with interested groups about the Jordan River and a trip with JRWAC members to visit successful dam removal projects in northern Washington State to better understand the political and ecological processes for watershed restoration.
