The TANK Center for Sonic Arts is located in Rangely, a rural and remote town in Northwestern Colorado with a population of roughly 2,500. As an arts center, the TANK’s primary activities are organized around a remarkable and unusual feature: its empty seven-story water tank, which was discovered in 1976 to have extraordinary acoustic resonance, a reverberation as long and rich as any in the world. For decades, it served as an ad hoc performance site and recording space for global experimental sound artists. In 2013, it was formalized into a nonprofit, renovated into an assembly hall and outfitted with a state-of-the-art recording studio. Today, it is one of Colorado’s most interesting and renowned artistic venues; due to its remote location, however, few in the Front Range have experienced it.

CU Boulder’s B2 Center for Media, Arts & Performance (B2) is unique as well. Located in the second basement of CU’s Roser ATLAS building, its Black Box Experimental Studio is equipped with some of the most advanced performance technology in the region, including a highly specialized, 44-speaker audio system. This specialized audio technology enables an audience to be fully surrounded by sound, creating a truly immersive listening environment. Its spatialized audio system has the unique capability to produce sculptural-like sound, making it exceptionally suited for replicating the TANK’s distinct acoustic resonance and sonic experience.

Connecting Colorado: A Sonic Arts Exchange is a co-created community engagement program between the TANK and B2. This program facilitates novel and mutually-beneficial artistic exchanges: CU Boulder students, scholars, and artists conduct biannual residencies at the TANK, recording in its characteristic sonic environment and engaging with the Rangely community. Residencies occur over two 5-day periods (May and September, 2024). Additionally, TANK sonic programming is presented in B2, introducing the Front Range community to the TANK’s renowned offerings and expanding the TANK’s capacity and impact across the state. These TANK-in-the-B2 concerts are free and open to the public.
