CU Boulder students will travel Pueblo communities in Northern New Mexico to meet and identify collaborators to create osteobiographical accounts of selected Pueblo Ancestors in partnership with descendant community members. Students will establish relationships and explore  opportunities to work together with communties to further illuminate Ancestral histories from osteobiographical evidence, existing oral histories and consented traditional knowledge. Students will also host  community-based events to establish personal relationships with descendants who are interested in participating in this project.

Relationship-building before undertaking research is essential and situated in ethical practice and acknowledges the historical legacy of extractive anthropology that anthropologists are working to remediate through collaborative work that acknowledges community knowledge and expertise. Students will gain awareness of sensitivities regarding the treatment of Ancestors, how to care for derived community knowledge, and how research must provide benefit to the tribes today, as defined by tribal members themselves. Finally, conversations with community members will inform students’ understanding of tribal perspectives on appropriate language use and how to productively discuss these subjects.
