The Civil Practice Clinic has found a growing need in Colorado for representation for low-income and underrepresented workers and tenants unable to afford legal help. Low-income workers and tenants struggle to find legal representation when they have a dispute with their employer or landlord because their cases are often not economically feasible for private attorneys to take on. Under the supervision of the clinic’s director, student-attorneys provide representation to workers in their legal disputes.
The clinic is filling this access-to-justice gap by partnering with non-profit organizations like Towards Justice, Bridge to Justice, the Community Economic Defense Project, Colorado Legal Services, and the Colorado Poverty Law Project to identify workers and tenants who would otherwise go unrepresented. In addition, the clinic accepts referrals from the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment and the Colorado State Personnel Board, state agencies that hear complaints brought by employees. The vast majority of employees go unrepresented in these cases, so student attorneys help both our clients and these agencies by helping to hone our clients’ cases to the most meritorious actions.
